MECHANICAL DESIGN
Intersecting Cones
I worked with Stanford d.school professor John Edmark to iterate on some of his personal design projects and develop curriculum for Stanford’s Mechanical Engineering 101 course.
The focal point of our work was an exploration of how laser-cut plywood shapes could combine to create 3D conical structures. I drafted many different models and variations in SOLIDWORKS and laser-cut them out of ¼ inch plywood. Working on this project, I had to walk the tightrope in between mathematical calculations and artistic intuition when designing the models - they couldn't be generated entirely algorithmically, but had to follow certain calculated geometries to work. |
